This blog aims to explore Picasso's relationship with the "primitive." The description of this group's assignment is as follows:
You might start with a book on Picasso, to
find out where he was introduced to other “primitive” cultures. You might want to see what the artist himself
has to say about the “primitive.” You
might have to comb through books to find more information. Check chronologies on Picasso’s life. Is there a particular moment that might have
influenced him? Think of every angle you
can. Were there particular exhibitions
or retrospectives of artists that might have influenced him? What about the artists he hung out with? Which works do you think are representative
of this period? Someone might find some
images and describe which features are particularly “primitive” based on his
contacts with x, y or z. What did he see
at the Ethnographic Museum at the Trocadero?
Does this seem like a plausible influence? Why/Why not?
Remember you can include images as part of your research, but you need
to talk about them.
